On behalf of the O’Keefe family and the JO’K Trust, Bruce Powell welcomes you to the first official Johnny O’Keefe Website.
A couple of years ago J O’K’s first and only recording company, Festival Records was sold by News Limited to Warner Music. It was of concern to Bruce Powell and the O’Keefe family that Warners may not understand the legacy of Johnny O’Keefe and his music following their purchase of Festival. Thankfully Ed St. John, CEO of Warners knows the Australian music business well and appreciates the work and trail blazing that Johnny O'Keefe and other Australian artists of the 50’s and 60’s contributed to ensure an on-going and successful Australian music industry.
2008 (August) is the 50th Anniversary of the release of “Wild One” the first successful Australian rock ‘n’ roll recording and 2008 (October) is also the 30th Anniversary of Johnny O’Keefe’s untimely passing.
As a way of celebrating the Birth of Australian Rock ‘n’ Roll and to commemorate John’s passing Warner Music are releasing various CD’s of Johnny O’Keefe’s recordings, all of which have been digitally enhanced and thus will sound better than ever before.
Warners have commissioned a documentary on J O’K featuring interviews with his wife Maureen, brother Barry, John’s children and many artists and people who worked with him and knew him professionally and personally.
J O’K’s “Wild One” written by John, Johnny Greenan and Dave Owens from the Dee Jays and disc jockey Tony Withers has been recorded by Iggy Pop with Australian rock band Jet and will be released to coincide with the 2008 music celebrations of “The Birth of Australian Rock ‘n’ Roll.
In addition to the material afore mentioned there will also be J O’K Exhibitions at various Arts Centres around Australia and concerts are being planned which will feature J O’K’s daughter Vicky. As more details come to hand we will list them on this website including CD release dates, track listings, documentary release times etc.
For now please view some of the O’Keefe family memorabilia items that our site features for your enjoyment and relive some memories of J O’K.
